LOW

Carol Todd Sat May 3 06:51:56 2003
We are looking for information on Capt. John LOW of Savannah, who was born ca. 1783-1784 in Northern Ireland, and died in 1876 in Griffin, Spalding Co., GA, and is buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah. He was in Savannah at some time during the war of 1812, and probably resided there continuously until the late 1840's or later. He was a Savannah River pilot, later owned all or part of the coastal steam packet St. Matthews, and was Savannah Harbormaster in the 1840's.

He was married to Lavinia ?unknown. He owned a house on the corner of Tattnall and Jones Streets that currently bears a plaque stating it to be "The John Low House", but we have not been able to find out more about this designation. (Note: this is not the Civil War Capt. John LOW of the CSS Alabama, nor do we believe him to have been related to Andrew LOW.) We have found little on him so far in the Georgia Historical Society.
We would surely appreciate any suggestions on where to look for more information. Thanks so much!

HALL

Earl Hall Thu May 29 09:05:20 2003
I have been checking on James HALL who lived in Savannah in 1811. I have a very old ref that he was banished from FL that year. He said Wm Craig of FL had told the Spanish that he was disloyal. In 1824 he offered himself for Congress in GA. In 1822 in the Savannah Republican he states he was not disloyal and that Craig was responsible for his banishment. HALL sued Craig in FL for his treatment and taking his land in FL. HALL had an attorney named John Rodman in FL. He called Francis Richard to speak for James HALL. My ancestor,John HALL lived near Francis Richard in FL and knew him. I have wondered if this James HALL is related to my John HALL? My John HALL went to Darien, GA to marry Mary SILCOX from FL and again to have their son William Ray HALL in MacIntosh County,GA.They returned to FL and lived there until death.
Does any of this info relate to anyone's research?
Thank you, Earl Hall - Tampa
