looking into the ancestry of one James KING 1802-<1870 [wife Ann], dau Amelia Sophia ca1843-<1880 who md Thomas Bartholmess MELL and had one Ida Ameila MELL 1870-1941. James & family lived next to The Sailor's Home in 1880 census with $3000 RE value. Thomas MELL & dau Ida lived with Thomas' father William in 1860 census -- Dist #4, Savannah.
Anyone know where The Sailor's Home is/was? Would James have been a river boat pilot? Would there be any interesting paperwork on him through his profession?
Also, is there any kind of swell maritime museum or living history experience in Savannah that my kids might enjoy when we travel there [short of me going to the Hist. Soc. or a library on my day-trip to Savannah]?
Thanks.

In the late 1800s & early 1900s, Thomas David DABBS, my grandfather, lived in Hagan, GA, now part of Statesboro, Chatham Cty., GA. He was married to a Lillie, and they had a child named Susie Mae, before Lillie passed away. Lillie is buried in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Statesboro. I have reason to believe that there was some relationship to a Jessie KAYLEE and if not a relative that she knew them very well. She passed away before I could talk to her.
Thomas David DABBS married my grandmother Jessie Bell GURGANIOUS (GURGANUS), after Lillie's death, when Susie Mae was around 5 yrs. old. I believe they were married around 1913 but I don't know where.
Jessie was a lot younger than Thomas and Thomas passed away in 1927 when my mom was only 7 yrs. old. Thomas & Jessie DABBS had three children together: Alberta, Sylvester & Elizabeth (my mom). My mother is the only one still alive, and she is 84 years old.
(I also believe that I had an Uncle Will GURGANIOUS and David GURGANIOUS (also spelled GURGANUS) that also lived in Statesboro around this time.) David is buried in Statesboro. Will is buried in the Langley Cemetery in Aiken Cty., SC. All of them were farmers.
Thomas is buried at the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery, but there is no marker, and we have not been able to find anyone at the church that has any written records of the cemetery. But my mom and aunt have visited his grave there. My mom has Alzheimers and no longer remembers the spot. He may have preached some at the Church also. Thomas also had an adopted son named Andrew (BRASBAR) DABBS, who was 23 years old when Thomas died and stayed in the Statesboro area.
I believe that Thomas DABBS's family were in Anson Cty., NC, and his father was, Archibald DABBS, Mother either Amanda BRAZZELL or Elizabeth (?). They were also related to HUNTLEYS somehow. Archibald's children were Thomas David-13 years old, William-15, Daniel-5, Green-2 & Adolphus-1. I believe that Elizabeth may have been Thomas and William's mother, and Amanda may have been the mother of the youngest three, due to the age difference. However, in the 1870 census, Amanda is listed as Thomas' sister in law, and Adolphus as his nephew.
Thomas David DABBS (ages match with above Thomas & my Thomas) was in Wateree Township, Kershaw County, SC, in 1870s, with wife Rachel & 3 mo. old son Thomas Z. DABBS. There was an Amanda and Adolphus living there also(ages matching above).
I am trying to find out if my grandfather was the same Thomas DABBS that was Archibald's son. Right now, all I know is that the ages match, and my mom has talked about hearing that he was from NC or the Columbia, SC, area, both of which would be matches with this census. My mother was too young to remember anything about him. She grew up in Aiken County, SC.
If Thomas was the son of Archibald, then my mom had a half brother that she never even knew existed. I would like to know what happened to Rachel and Thomas Z. Rachel was 23 in 1870 and Thomas was 24. My mom knew about his wife named Lillie in Statesboro, and was raised up with Susie Mae and Loved her as much as a full sister. I want to know everything that I can find out about Thomas David DABBS whether it is good or bad. Please email me at sarahwcrook@aol.com.

My grandmother, Ada Eleanor ALLEN, passed away August 11, 2004. She was born and raised around the Chatham County area. We always thought that she had only been married twice during her lifetime. After talking to a family member, we were told that she was married one other time which would of been her first marriage. This marriage, we believe, would of happened in Chatham County. My grandmothers birth date is Feb. 1, 1920.
How do we go about finding out this information? Thank you, Laura Lamm

I would like to inquire about the prison camp Gen. Hugh W. MERCER was commandant and the Union black soldiers who disappeared and as a new interstate was being put through where the camp had been, the bodies of black Union soldiers were found. Could you verify if this is true? Also if there was a reason Gen. MERCER never moved into MERCER House that had something to do with the discrepancy at the prison camp?
