Seeking info on Joseph WOOD(S) who was born in Christ Church Parish which later became known as Savannah (Chatham County), Georgia some 12 years before the official chartering of the Georgia colony. It is likely that Joseph's family was among the wealthy landowners from South Carolina who settled on cheap land in Georgia and who established there, with the North Carolinians and Virginians, the plantation system and slavery. A note in Book D of "Colonial Records" in the State Library in Atlanta, Georgia describes Joseph as "Having wife, five children, eight Negroes," and 300 acres of Black Creek Land. Parish records indicate that Joseph married Mary STERLING in 1746 in Christ Church Parish, Georgia. The last child's name (probably a daughter) is unknown.
Records in the Atlanta Georgia State House say that Joseph acted as deputy to his son, Captain John WOODS, in the position as paymaster to the First Georgia Regiment of Continental troops from the summer of 1776 until October 1777.

Trying to find out who my grandmother & grandfather were - James O. YOUNG and his wife Annie E. YOUNG. My grandfather, I think, was emancipated when General Sherman came to Savannah but I think was also half Cherokee Indian. My grandmother was born in Georgia in 1879, but I am not sure if in Savannah - could also be from Louisville, GA, but I really cannot find out much, as my father, James Trummy YOUNG is deceased, and so are his sisters Lillian TAYLOR and Annie KILROY. I have searched but cannot find out much at all. Thank you.
