Having just purchased the US 1880 census on CD, I did a surname search and to my surprise came up with quite a few entries to my surprise some of them were being Black, am I right in assuming that would have taken the name of their owner if they were slaves if so how do I find out who their owner was.
There were two familes in Chatham 1 black 1 white. The blacks lived in Savannah and the whites were just down as Chatham. The white man was a merchant I assume that blacks were used for other work aswell as plantation work.
Thank You, Gillian Nixon - Yorkshire, England

I'm looking for information on Fred HODGES (possibly James Frederick HODGES, Jr.) and his wife, possible first name DeAlva. They were potentially living in Savannah, GA in 1936. Fred would have been born between 1890 and 1900, most likely in Bulloch County, GA. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Did your paper ever publish an article about a diary written by Johann Christoff BORNEMANN who came to Georgia in the 1750's? It covers the time from the start of the journey from Gottingen Germany until after his death (latter written by others, obviously). The original of the diary is now in the Henderson Library of Georgia Southern Univ. at Statesboro. It was donated to the library last year (2000). I was told by somone else that they learned of the diary earlier than that from a person associated with a newspaper in Savannah. I think an article about the diary was published in the paper.
I am trying to find anything written about the diary and the BORNEMANN family.
