CRONK - LOW

Carol Todd Wed Oct 3 13:42:24 2001
We are searching for information on the CRONK family who lived in or near Savannah in the mid 1800's. My husband's great grandfather, James Fuller CRONK, was born May 17, 1850, and later emigrated to Texas. I do not know who his siblings (if any)or parents were. I have found a record of marriage between Saunders CRONK and Sarah E. L. LOW on May 13, 1847; Chatham, GA; I would guess that these are either his parents or uncle and aunt. We appreciate any leads anyone can give us.
Thanks to all who are providing research on this website. Carol

"My" Fanny CHARLTON married James P. DALE in Richmond County in 1864. Is she the one listed in the 1860 census of Chatham County? Can anyone identify her parents or siblings?

CHISHOLM

Antoinette Rusell Wed Oct 17 09:56:09 2001
Good Morning, I am searching for African American CHISHOLMs, My great great grandfather was a slave belonging to David CHISHOLME Jr, he was originally from Hanover , county Virginia . In 1809 he moved his slaves to Chester, South Carolina. In 1814 my great great grandfather was born . He was located in Gainesville, Florida in 1870. In 1869 he bought land with 35,000 lbs of Sea Island cotton. My understanding is that Gainesville is just about two hours from Chatam County, Georgia. I have see many times that there are many blacks with the surname of CHISHOLM in that county. Can someone tell me why there are so many black CHISHOLMs in the area and if they may have come from the Chester, South Carolina area. Is any one familiar with just freed blacks having so much cotton, where would they have grown it? Whose property was it? How could such a monumental task been handled by just freed slaves. They were not on the 1860 census for free blacks, but they were in Windsor, Florida at least by 1852 because my great grandfather was born there.
Any help would really be appreciated. thank you in advance. Antoinette

LEE

Kimberly Krautter Fri Dec 28 20:45:20 2001
My grandmother was Sara Ellen LEE of Savannah Georgia. She married Jack LANUM and settled in Atlanta where she had four children, Jacqueline, Ebba Diane (known as "Penny", my mother), Judith, and Walter Russell. She was a renowned concert dancer chaperoned by some eccentric aunts (which sounds entirely consistent with Savannah types!). Her family's Savannah home burned decades ago, and with it the family Bible with all of the birth and death records. Ancestors lived in what is now the town of Brooklet, Georgia before settling in Savannah after the Civil War. A prominent name in the family was General Fitzhugh LEE. It is said that his first name was actually "General" and that he was named for the military General Fitzhugh LEE, a relative. I am trying to re-build a record of my grandmother's ancestry and would appreciate any assistance you can provide. Thank you.
