McCRAY - GARRETT - FASON

Anne Rousseau Fri Sep 26 08:16:24 2003
I am searching for info on my GGGGrandfather, Epaphroditus McCRAY in Hancock. He married Mary FASON / FAISON / FOSON. She was the daughter of William FASON / FAISON / FOSON.
Epaphroditus McCRAY was referred to as Eppa in records that I have found. All census records say that he was born in Georgia, and is listed in all Hancock census records through 1870. He served in the War of 1812. He married Mary FOSON in 1814 in Hancock County. His son, Robert McCRAY, is my GGgrandfather and he married Martha Ann BRANTLEY in Hancock.

The first info I have on Eppa is 1812 when he bought 2 slaves from John Frazier's widow, Leanna and later purchased land from Leanna Frazier. In 1812 he was listed as paying taxes on 116 acres of land the was origionally granted to Owen Fluker in Washington County, which was cut into Hancock. This was on Buffalo Creek.

I have not been able to find how Eppa acquired this property from Owen Fluker. Nor how Eppa got to Hancock County. From ages listed in census records he was born either in 1787/1789

GARY - PALMER

Mary Lynn Gary Skelton Mon Sep 29 21:36:51 2003
My ggg-grandfather was Rev. S. Henry GARY. His father was James GARY who was the Justice of the Peace in Hancock Co. from 1799 - 1802. Henry was born in Hancock Co. in 1805. He was in Baldwin County in the 1850 census and had moved to Texas by the 1860 census. He apparently died before 1870. His wife was Sarah Loraboma PALMER.

I am trying to locate information on this family while they lived in Georgia. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

HYMAN

John Brinsfield Mon Nov 17 06:16:00 2003
Is there or was there a community or church by the name of "Asibi" in Hancock County? I am doing research on a Civil War Chaplain, John James HYMAN, who enlisted in Co.I of the 49th Georgia Infantry, i.e. "Pierce Guards of Hancock County" in 1862 and surrendered at Appomattox in 1865. Chaplain HYMAN was a Baptist. I believe his father's name was Henry, who appears on the Hancock County Census of 1850. When Chaplain J. J. HYMAN died in 1906, he was living at his home near "Asibi".
I wondered if that location was in Hancock County.
Thank you, John Brinsfield, Ph.D.

VEASY / VEAZEY

Roxanna Jolly Mon Mar 15 09:56:48 2004
George Washington VEAZEY was born in Greene County, Georgia in 1816. He was the son of Timothy VEAZEY, according to Ann (VEAZEY) DAVIS in her book "Descendants of John VEAZEY." George lived in Greene County until about 1838 and moved to Troup County, Ga. He married Elizabeth R. BARNES on 16 November 1837 in Troup County. Elizabeth was the daughter of William BARNES and Phebe VEAZEY. Elizabeth died in 1838 in Troup County and George married Mary CARDWELL there on 3 January 1839. The family later moved to Tallapoosa County, Alabama. George enlisted in the Civil War, entering the Confederate service in 1863. After serving a few months, he contracted a fever, from which he died in 1864. His widow died in 1872 at the age of 60 years.

Found the above on a website. No one seems to know much about Phebe VEAZEY and her husband William BARNES. Is she the Phebe BARNES whom later married Noah PEPPIN in Troup County? If so, what happened to William? Did they have a son named Walter T C BARNES who died in VA during wartime? Any information at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

CAMP

Diana White Fri Aug 13 14:22:09 2004
In checking the Handy Book for Genealogists, I find that Hancock County should have all of its probate and marriage records. I am interested in the probate record for Cecellius CAMP, died 1824, in Hancock County. Has any individual or group published information on this probate? Also, are the marriage records published? Are there any printed indexes?
I have seen the abstractions of probate notices taken from the newspaper, but I am interested in the actual documents.
Also, what has been your experience in getting records from the courthouse?
Thank

PEAK

Carolyn Peak Smith Sun Aug 22 05:33:36 2004
On the indexed copy of the 1830 Census for Hancock Co. it says Thomas PEAK (my Great-great Grandfather's name). When I look at the actual census it looks like Osborn PEAK.
Can any one help me with this?
My Great-great grandfather was born 1808 in South Carolina and shows up in Stewart Co., Ga. in 1839 at a church meeting and purchased land in Stewart Co. in 1840.
I do not have his Mother and Father's names so I am trying to trace the family backwards. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. He married Rebecca RUDD in Jefferson Co, Fla. in 1833.

Looking for the location of the BURNLEY homesite. Israel BURNLEY (~1720-~1792) received land grant in Greene Cty which became Hancock. Believe site to be near Powelton, perhaps near family cemetery where Joel Smith BURNLEY (1836-1919) and his wife, Mary Will HENRY are buried. Also living there could have been Israel's son, Henry BURNLEY (1756-1835) and Henry's son, Stephen Garland BURNLEY (1797-1873).

CHOICE

I am searching for information concerning the property of Tully CHOICE Sr and Rebecca SIMS. I am African-American and my research shows that Tully CHOICE, the grandson of Tully CHOICE Sr., was the slave owner of my ancestors. He moved to Texas around 1856-1866 and in the process brought his slaves with him. He consequently settled in Smith County Texas.

My dilemma is I need to know the names of the slaves he had before they were emacipated. Currently I am trying to get copies of the tax rolls for Smith County around this time but another avenue I thought about trying is finding out the names of the slaves owned by his grandfather. They would be the parents of the children in Texas. This grandson, Tully CHOICE, father's name was Jessie CHOICE. I know that Jessie CHOICE's mother after his father died married a man name John McGILVERY. This man and some other son in laws of Tully CHOICE Sr. namely BUTTS, GaRY etc., owned or co-owned many of the same slaves.

So I need the names listed on the property of either Tully CHOICE Sr. of Georgia or Tully CHOICE the grandson of Smith County Texas. Anyone the can help me find out this information will be greatly appreciated.
