I am looking for any information on Ephraim SKILES, who apprears in the 1840 Walker County, GA census. I believe he is the same Ephraim L. SKILES who appears in the Harrison County, TX census of 1850, and whose son George Washington SKILES moved to Wood County, TX, where some of his descendants still live today. In the 1840 census this family had 5 male children and 3 female children. Family tradition says that the oldest daughter, named Delilah, born in 1827 TN married Wilson E. NELSON, on 8 Feb 1844 and the couple settled in Texas. The rest of the SKILES family followed her to TX, being in Harrison County, TX by 1850. TARVIN, b. 1794 Twiggs County (or possibly Columbia County) Georgia d. 1850's probably in Sugar Valley, Gordon County, GA., married in Columbia County, Georgia Cassandra Ann OFFUTT, b. 1801 Columbia Co. GA. His probable brothers are: Churchwell and Reddick TARVIN. His parents are unknown but leading candidates are: George TARVIN (1757) and Martha H.. I found Francis BROWN, age 48, living with the Buy JONES family in the 1850 W Chick, Walker County Census. Daughter, Mary Elizabeth BROWN, age 19 living with Archibald and Eliz BOND in the next household. In Lookout Mountain, Walker County Census James age 12, and Charlotte BROWN, age, 21, were living with James and Tabitha BOND. Francis and Charlotte were listed as born in South Carolina. Mary and James were listed as born in Georgia. Francis was not listed in the 1860 census but James and Charlotte were still living with the BOND family. Their father's birth state was listed as South Carolina. Mary Francis married a teacher James MANN the son of James MANN and Mary Polly HEFLIN MANN. I would like to find the name of the father of this BROWN family. G.W. BROWN is listed in 1840 correct number children and ages. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks! -- Warren R. Magnuson

My great grandmother on my mother's side was Antoinette FORTUNE. She was born 8 May 1842 in Walker County, GA. Her parents were William FORTUNE and Mary HICK from either GA or NC. I know they moved to MO and I have found them on an 1860 MO census. I would like to find them on the 1850 census, maybe GA. They had 3 other girls, Martha, b. 1835; Harriett, b. 1843 and Elizabeth, b. 1844 and at least 1 son, William D., all born in GA. I am trying to find out about William and Mary; where they were born, when they were born, what brothers and sisters they had, what children they had other than Antoinette, Martha, Harriett, Elizabeth and William. Searching for history of my ancestors who lived in Walker Co., GA as early as the 1830's. Hartwell B. BELL, (b. 1798 Rutherford County, NC) married Elizabeth (Betsy) FORTUNE in 1818, Rutherford Co. NC. They moved to Walker Co. GA in 1837. Their known children are: John B.; James W.; Williamson F.; Hartwell B., Jr; Doctor S.(Docks); Elizabeth, Jr; Sarah Ann; Mary & Harriet W. Hartwell died in Feb 1846 and is buried at the Dogwood Cemetery, Whitfield Co., GA. Elizabeth lived at Trickum, Whitfield Co., GA until her death after 1880.
Their son, Williamson F. BELL married Elizabeth (Betty) DUNN about 1848 in Walker Co. GA. They are listed in 1860-70 in Roane County, TN. They moved to Arkansas and then Indian Territory of OK. Elizabeth DUNN's parents were Simon & Margaret (WELLS) DUNN who moved to Walker County, GA in the 1830's. They had 9 known children. It is believed that Margaret had two brothers, David & James who moved to said County in 1844. Any information would be appreciated. -- Barbara Graham

I am researching the MORGAN and BROCK families of Walker County for the years 1840-1875. My great grandfather, James MORGAN, married Mary BROCK, daughter of John BROCK. A portion of the Chickamauga battle was fought on the farm of John BROCK. The 1870 Walker County census shows John BROCK living in the Frick's Gap area. James MORGAN was shown living with John's family. They all left the area sometime after c1871-1875. Anyone with information on where the John BROCK moved, please let me know. I know that James MORGAN and Mary BROCK moved to Moscow, Tennessee around 1875. Thanks for the help! -- Barry Morgan

James Middleton SMITH was born about 1809 in Georgia, most likely in the Walker County. He was a farmer in 1860 in Columbia, Randolph Co. AR. He was married to Susan WALLEN before 1830 in Hamilton Co. TN. Susan WALLEN was born about 1809 in Lee Co. VA. She died between 1860 and 1870 in Randolph Co. AR. She was also known as Sooky. Children of James Middleton SMITH and Susan WALLEN are:
(1.) William (2.) Sally, b. abt 1832 Hamilton Co. TN (3.) Mary, b. abt 1834 in Hamilton Co. TN (4.) Priscilla (5.) Campbell (6.) Nancy, b. abt 1840 in Hamilton Co. TN. She was a seamstress in 1860 in Columbia, Randolph Co. AR. (7.) Caroline Catherine, b. abt 1842 in Hamilton Co. TN. She was also a seamstress in 1860 AR (8.) Martha, b. abt 1844 in Walker Co. GA (9.) Tennessee (10.) Henry, b. abt 1859 in Randolph Co. AR.

NOTE: In one account that I read, it mentioned that William Hutton DOUGLASS was born on a ship enroute from Scotland. He said he was a cousin of Stephen Arnold DOUGLAS of Illinois. It also mentioned that (Margaret)DOUGLASS had been born twenty miles north of Chattanooga in the Sequatchie River Valley in 1796. Thanks! -- Virginia White

Need info. on Elisha BREEDLOVE, b.in S.C. living in Walker co. in 1860 & 1870. Jacob BREEDLOVE (maybe bro.to Elisha) born S.C. is living in Walker co. 1860. Jacob has a child named Jasper P.SNIDER b.1857 TN ,3yr's old living with him in 1860. Elisha has the same child 10 year's later. Jacob has left Walker co. However the big problem is Jasper P. SNIDER turns into Jasper BREEDLOVE in 1870 with Elisha. My husbands relatives comes from Jasper. So can anyone help me determine if they are BREEDLOVE's or SNIDER's. Mary J. WATTS married Joseph BUFFINGTON, Nov.5,1885 in Dade Co. Ga. However MARY's family was from Walker co. Ga. Her obit. states the following.....MARY J. BUFFINGTON died at her home near Deerheads cove March 30,1951. Brothers & Sisters are..Daisy, Astelle, Della, Maude, Cynthia, John, Henery, Bud (prob.a nickname), Lum (prob.a nickname) all being the children of (William WATTS-this info.not in obit.) I found Joseph BUFFINGTON's will and William WATTS was petitioner,it also said petitioner was father-in-law of deceased. Can anyone help with info. on these families? Thank you ! -- Suzie Breedlove

William was 67 years of age and born in NC, Rebecca was 57 and born in SC. I feel this William is perhaps the older brother of my ancestor, Robert Boyd CONLEY of Union Co. Don't know where this family went from here. Mary married Edmon HAMBY and is found in Logan Co. AR in 1880. John married in Christian Co. MO and is found in the 1900 census with wife and children. Also in Hiram's household were:Joseph PRICE, 19 SC; Frederic DEAN, 30 GA; Maryan RICHARDS, 19 SC. I cannot find Hiram or Sarah after 1850. Son John was living in Calhoun Co. AL in 1850 in the household of William CLOW, where he worked as a "hireling". From c1871 until his death in 1917, John H. JENNINGS lived in Hamilton Co. TN. Thanks! -- Nicole Pinson

I am seeking information on James Coy TYGART (sic) and Sarah Elizabeth "Betsy" GRIFFIN, married in Walker County ca. 1835. James Coy was the son of John TYGART and Eve HUETT (sic) who resided in McLemore's Cove toward the south end of this area in Cedar Grove. A courthouse fire probably destroyed any/all extant records making it extremely difficult to research these lines. Looking forward to interested inquiries relating to my lines, and I will be glad to exchange information with others. I am looking for information on David H. HIXON (died 1920). He was married to Carrie Lee SCALES in 1906. He was twice Mayor of Rossville. His sons were Harold David HIXON (d. 1969) and Joseph David HIXON (d. 1975). David H. HIXON came from a large family and was part Indian. Other relatives in the area were Cora HIXON. Any replies would be helpful.

Have you checked the Cherokee By Blood books to see if he or any descendants filed for benefits thru the Cherokees?

I am researching the SMITH and MAJORS of NW Georgia. Abdallah Daniel SMITH was first in Randolph County and came up to Walker Co. to participate in the land lotteries of 1832. He gained land which in 1838 became Chattooga, but began as Walker Co.(I believe). I also seek Deraslin Frances SMITH or Ester MAJOR SMITH and Richard MAJORS & Cloe BENNETT (Ester's parents).
