Pierce County was established 11 Mar 1887 and organized 11 Apr 1889. The county seat is Rugby. It was named for Gilbert Ashville Pierce (1829-1901). He was a newspaperman and served as governor of Dakota Territory 1884-1887. He later served as a US Senator. Area - 1053 square miles.
