GLADDING was an enterprenuer and had several buisinesses in Cortland during at least 1920-1954 or so. There was a caramel shop next to the old Cortland Hotel, a boarding house, possibly a Cadillac dealership. My grandfather was John (died 1930 or so) and my was grandmother Edith GLADDING died 1953). Benjamin Franklin GLADDING started the fishing line business in Cortland. Would anyone up there happen to know where the old GLADDING homestead was (or is) located on Greek Peak? We had a farm and house on the mountain somewhere in 1954. The house was a big white farm house with white board siding and a front porch. There were chicken houses also.
Do you know where I might get a history of the area prior to 1959 when the ski resort began and after all businesses and homes owned by GLADDING were gone??
I am one of the twins born of Edward and Gay GLADDING in 1953 in Cortland Hospital.
Thanks, Julia Gladding

Jerry Secaur Mon Nov 14 16:16:05 2005
I came across an Edward A. SECAUR from Cortland in my search of the family. Edward is a family name as my grandfather, father and brother go by that name. The Edward in Cortland was born in 1923 and enlisted in the service Jan. 23, 1943. The branch only listed him as for Warrant Officer, though he was a private. Does anyone have any info on Edward A. SECAUR?

I am reseraching the Moses RICE in Solon, Cortland, NY but would like to know if anyone on this list knows the genealogy of the Moses RICE in Virgil.
Thanks in advance.

Looking for obit information on Diana W (SCRIVEN) ROOT. She was married to Hezekiah ROOT. She is listed as living with her daughter (Jennette) and son-in-law (Charles CLARK) in Preble in 1920. Her daughter died 5 Jan 1924 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery. Hezekiah died in Apr 1906 and according to his obit in the Syracuse Herald (the funeral was held at the M. E. Church and the burial was made at that place). I don't know what cemetery that is.
I am hoping her obit might shed light on her and her parents.

Aloha from Hawaii. Mele Kalikimaka and Hauoli Makahiki Hou. In 1870, 19-year-old Lyman SMITH, a brother of my grgrandfather was living in Cortlandville, in the home of John STROBRIDGE, and was a "student." As the youngest son of a prosperous miller in rural Monroe Co, it would seem that he was furthering his education at Cortland.
I'm having difficulty finding out what happened to him later on. Any info about the school he was attending -- or anything else that's relevant -- would be really appreciated.
Thanks. David Kayner
