WHITE - CAREY

chuck friday Thu Nov 3 10:16:45 2005
According to historian George Condon (author of "Stars in the Water: The Story of the Erie Canal", 1974) he mentions that Madison County provided the proper lime necessary for making hydraulic cement for the Erie Canal. He states that the source of this lime was near Chittenango. Canvass WHITE and Elisha CAREY were prominent Erie Canal figures in this endeavor. Would it be possible to acquire information with regard to the lime kiln industry that was operating during this period in Madison County (circa 1800 - 1825)? I am specifically interested in the details of the kiln operation and the quarrying of the limestone for the kilns.
Thank you
