I seek information, particularly birth and land records, relating to the family of John Theodore ZIETZ and his wife, Charlotta (NIESSER) ZIETZ, both of whom were born in Germany, about 1830 and 1831 respectively. They came to America about 1853 on a windjammer that came from Hamburg to New York. After a short stay near New York, they moved west to Prairie du Chien, WI, where they lived on a meager farm. They likely came to their new home as soon as the railroad from Milwaukee was completed to the banks of the Mississippi in 1857. Most of their 15 children were born there.
I know the names of 12 of the children and the probable order of their birth. They were John, born about 1854 in New York; Caroline, b. abt. 1856; Mary, b. abt. 1858; Charlotte, b. 20 Nov 1859 in Prairie du Chien; Henry H., b. 20 Apr 1863 in P. du C.; Frederick, b. 1864-1865 in P. du C.; Theodore J., b. 1868-1869 in P. du C.; Ernest C., b. 1870-1871 in P. du C.; Emma, b. 1871-1872 in P. du C.; Charles, b. Oct 1873in P. du C.; William D., b. Mar 1877 in P. du C.; and Laura, b. 1877-1878 in Kansas.
Daughter Charlotte, who was usually called "Lottie" was one of my maternal, great-grandmothers. I have her birth date and place from her death certificate with my grandmother having been the informant. The other dates and places I have derived from later U. S. Census and death info from Denver, CO, where most of them re-settled after 1880.
Father, John Theodore ZEITS, volunteered from Prairie du Chien to serve with the 43rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment in the last year of the Civil War and mustered out on 24 Jun 1865 as a Sergeant. He sustained some injuries while in the service, which made it difficult for him later to maintain proper care for all of his children. As a result, he dismissed several of the older ones from the household in the 1870's to make their own ways in the world somewhat prematurely by today's standards. They seemed to all head for Colorado and eventually to Denver. The rest of the family moved there later, after a brief stay in Maquoketa, Jackson Co., Iowa around 1880. Most of them remained in the Denver area for the rest of their lives.
In July of this year one of my brothers and I will be coming to Prairie du Chien to try and learn more of the ZIETZ family origins there. We would greatly value any assistance or leads which might be provided to us beforehand to facilitate our fact gathering. Thank you.

I am looking for any decendants of Roy HAYES or Sherman TURK. These two families moved to Kidder Co., North Dakota in April 1904. Per my grandmother, they were all back in Gays Mills by the end of the harvest season. Also included in that move was my ggrandfather Charley THOMSON and his family, along with Charley's daughter and son-in-law Ica and James KANE.
I have some information about this move I'd be willing to share. I'm hoping others might have more to add. Thank you
